Keeping one of Portugal’s most visited cities safer with video surveillance
Porto, Portugal, renowned for its rich history and vibrant culture, had experienced a significant uptick in visitors, solidifying its status as one of the most sought-after destinations in the country. But the influx resulted in a new challenge. The local police force needed to manage an increasing volume of people on the streets.
In response to these concerns, the municipality recognized the need for a comprehensive video surveillance system that would both enhance public safety and provide a clearer picture of traffic and crowd dynamics.
With a focus on real-time monitoring and proactive response, they looked for a video surveillance solution that provides maximum coverage and high image quality. An ideal solution would have future-proof tech that could be enhanced to accommodate additional features, such as video analytics. The initiative underscores Porto’s commitment to ensuring residents and visitors alike feel comfortable and safe.

Solution
Full-spectrum monitoring, outstanding image quality
The municipality and law enforcement carefully evaluated their options. They prioritized high-quality image resolution to ensure every detail is captured clearly and wanted a robust system that would work reliably in varying conditions. Ultimately, they chose a state-of-the-art video surveillance solution from Bosch. Systems integrator Soltráfego was responsible for installing the system.
For the solution, 194 multi-sensor cameras were installed at various points throughout the city. With multiple lenses, each high-quality camera with multiple lenses gives a full-spectrum view of the area it’s monitoring. This gives the police the view needed of the municipality’s streets to ensure people feel safe.
Real-time action thanks to real-time surveillance and smart software
To be able to react quickly, Porto wanted a system that lets them monitor in real-time and intervene when needed. The selected cameras and Video Management System does just that. The police force can monitor remotely, and deploy locally if something arises. Each camera also makes two recordings, a primary and secondary to ensure a backup is available if needed.
The Video Management System is the brain of the operations.
In addition to real-time monitoring, it also allows users to rapidly search any event. The high-detail footage is easy to evaluate and understand, and provides transparency should questions about an event arise in the future. The system can be enhanced with video analytics in the future to make Porto a smart city.
Today, locals and tourist feel safe in Porto. The mayor is delighted and is already talking about rolling out a second phase to further enhance this remarkable solution.
